The line from Robert de Skene, who received the charter to the lands of Skene by Robert the Bruce in 1318, to this Adam de Skene, who died in 1411, is unclear. According to the Dictionary of National Biography 1885-1900, Vol. 52, "Skene, Sir John (1543?-1617), Adam was Robert's grandson, but "Memorials of the family of Skene of Skene, from the family papers, with other illustrative documents" name Gillian de Skene, Adam de Skene (I) and Adam de Skene (II) between Robert and Adam de Skene (III).
