Note
|
Cornelis van Aerssen van Sommelsdijck (1637-1688) was a Dutch nobleman and politician who, after a career in the Netherlands, sought new opportunities in Suriname. In 1683, he acquired a significant share in the Society of Suriname and became governor of the then-small colony. Eager to develop Suriname, Van Aerssen van Sommelsdijck encouraged the settlement of French Huguenots and Labadists, and made peace with the indigenous Amerindians. He also brought in soldiers to bolster the colony's defenses, but their unruly behavior led him to impose strict regulations. Tragically, this sparked a mutiny in 1688, resulting in Van Aerssen van Sommelsdijck and his assistant being killed by disgruntled soldiers. Though rumored to be immensely wealthy, he was later revealed to be deeply in debt. Despite his untimely demise, his efforts to develop Suriname left a lasting impact on the colony's early history. |
