Note

Erskine was born in Alva House, constructed by his father in 1636. He was the third son of Sir Charles Erskine of Alva and Cambuskenneth and Mary Hope, the daughter of Sir Thomas Hope. Erskine became the laird of Alva House on July 8, 1663, and bought a baronetcy in Nova Scotia on April 30, 1666.

He served as Shire Commissioner for Clackmannanshire in 1665 and 1667. In 1689, he was elected as an MP for Stirlingshire in the Scottish Parliament and also served as Shire Commissioner for Stirlingshire that year.
